Alpaca Farming – Purchasing Your First Alpaca – Part 2

In my previous article, I talked about selecting your first alpaca on the basis of its color, temperament, etc.

When you buy your alpaca, you must make sure you get the ARI registration papers along with a list of awards and health issues. If she has had more than 2 lost pregnancies, or has given birth to more than 2 crias who didn’t survive, you need to probe further, before buying her.

When you are buying a pregnant dam, you must ask whether a scientific test of pregnancy was done. You must also ask when the breeding was done, and when the baby cria is due. Your contract should also mention fertility guarantee, if any.

Next, you must also insure that your alpaca has taken his or her vaccinations and wormer dosages for the particular state (area) where you will be raising him/her, corresponding to the diseases and parasites native to the area.

Cruelty to Animals Comes In Different Colors

Cruelty to animals comes in different colors. Some not so pretty and some are just plain ugly. Take for example: the owner of a race dog, to them this is just an investment and rarely will any of them humanize the dog. They are in it for the money and not looking for a pet. The question is, what happens to the dogs when they are retired at an early age?

Now take a look at puppy mills or animal factories, as some like to call them. The people that operate them are also in it for the money and could care less about generics. It’s a business to them and not a very honorable profession in my opinion.

The biggest disappointment ends up with the uneducated and unsuspecting buyer who must tend to the problems inherited or give up their pet. Unwanted dogs end up in a shelter and hopefully get a second chance at life.

Let’s take a look at the ugly, what is the prime reason behind dog fights? Or any other type of sport where animals are pitted against each other for the pleasure of a few betting low life individuals.

They have as much right to live as humans do, thus they should not be used as testing dummies.

Following are some ways to find out if the cosmetics are cruelty-free:

• Labels are the best way to first screen these products. Cruelty-free labels are widely promoted on these products to promote this life-style. If in doubt consult their respective URLs.

• There are a wide range of cosmetic lines owned by companies practicing “no animal test policy”. Lot of companies on the other hand uses animals to ensure the safety of their products.
